Macramé Bottle Holder: Fit the Base, Net and Handle

Amber bottle inside a cream knotted sleeve

A bottle holder needs to fit the bottle’s widest section and support its base. A pretty open net can still let a narrow bottle escape. Build the fit around the actual container, then decide whether the finished piece is a decorative sleeve or a light carrying holder.

Take these measurements first

  • Base diameter: measure the part that must not slip through the bottom.
  • Maximum circumference: wrap a tape around the widest part, not just the neck.
  • Body height: measure where the net should start and stop.
  • Neck shape: check whether a shoulder can help retain the sleeve, or whether the bottle is straight-sided.

Write the measurements on removable tape attached to the bottle. If you will carry water, the full bottle is heavier than the empty one used to establish the shape. This guide does not supply a carrying capacity or certify a handle.

Choose cord and a practice container

Use a washable cord whose care instructions you understand. Jute gives a rustic finish but can shed and react differently to moisture from cotton or synthetic cord. Practice around a nonbreakable container of similar size before putting a glass bottle in the sleeve. Never knot directly around hot glass.

Understand the square-knot net

A square knot uses two outer working strands around two inner filler strands. In the next row, take two strands from one group and two from its neighbor. This alternating arrangement creates the openings. Follow the beginner knot instructions if the distinction is new.

For a small sample, fold four cords over a temporary support to obtain eight strands. Tie two square knots across the first row. Leave the outside two strands on each side and tie one knot with the central four. Compare a small gap with a larger gap. The large gap stretches farther and opens more easily; it is not automatically a better fit.

Plan the holder in five stages

  1. Start with a closed base. Use a base detail from a complete pattern that retains your container. A decorative knot at the center is not enough if the surrounding openings are larger than the bottle base.
  2. Divide the strands evenly. Keep each group the same size. Mark one starting group so you can count rows around the tube.
  3. Work the first net row. Space knots evenly around a supported container. The net should sit against the body without forcing the bottle through it.
  4. Alternate the groups. Use equal gaps and check the circumference after each row. Remove and replace the practice container to find tight spots early.
  5. Resolve the handle last. A decorative loop and a carrying strap have different requirements. Follow a complete handle attachment design rather than joining loose tails with an improvised knot.

Fit checks that catch common problems

Problem Likely cause Adjustment
Bottle slides down Base openings too large Redesign the base rather than only tightening upper rows.
Net pulls sideways Unequal gaps or missed group Count knots and compare row heights.
Neck is hard to access Net extends too high End the body below the opening and plan a separate strap.

Use and care

Keep the bottle supported during fitting. Check the base and handle before each use, and stop if cords fray or knots move. Do not use a homemade holder for hot liquid, a valuable bottle or situations where a dropped container could injure someone. For a similar net with a different shape, our plant hanger guide helps explain why the bottom cradle matters.
